Dear Readers,

Modern society calls for women empowerment and it has been practised in almost every country. The spectrum for women empowerment is wide enough but instilling sense of condence among them through self defense training is one of the criteria for the said purpose. West Bengal Police has recently launched Sukanya – a self defense training scheme for girl students in Bidhan nagar, Barrackpur & Howrah as a part of its community initiatives at a programme in Bidhan nagar. This will be extended in other commissionerates and districts in phases.

The ofcers and men of West Bengal Police at the call of Hon’ble Chief Minister came forward to deal with the decit in blood collection during sweltering summer and donated 16,000 units of blood in a span of 7 days. Utsarga– a community initiative has also been launched from June this year to organize blood donation and free medical checkup camps. This will be organized throughout the year by various Police units.

Besides articles on our community initiatives, we have accommodated articles on some districts in North Bengal. These articles have unveiled how we have curbed down Cannabis cultivation in Cooch Behar and Poppy cultivation in Malda. Police is determined on getting rid of these unwanted produce in the public interest. Concerted efforts are being made to ensure that farmers are not motivated to grow these plants, which are harmful for the society at large. It is unique that people are now able to le their grievances online, through the website of Jalpaiguri District Police. There is an article on introduction of tourist police in Alipurduar district. The initiative of Uttar Dinajpur District Police in arranging vocational training and job fair for the unemployed youths has been depicted. An article has elucidated modernization measures for better trafc management. Formation of three new police districts in South 24 Paraganas for better policing has been described in another article. There are other regular sections in this issue of Protector as well.

West Bengal Police will remain ever vigilant throughout the state to ensure safety, security of the people and visitors in the state. We however, welcome any suggestions from our readers which will be of immense value.
