Modern cities are witnessing integration at various levels, and thus the need for a modernised, integrated and secure security system. The requirements from the modern police force have been appropriately defined by Prime Minister – Narendra Modi in the expression, “Smart Policing”.

According to the Prime Minister,a professionally- efficient, technologically enabled, socially-sensitive police upholds the rule of law and human rights in all situations, and is also engaged optimally with the community. India is the one of the fastest growing economies in the world with exponential growth of population in cities and metros; hence, the need to focus on maintaining safety and security of our citizens, businesses, and critical infrastructures.

As per plan, India will soon have 100 Smart Cities in the near future. Smart policing is thus an essential requirement. Organised crime in urban spaces and the growing nexus between terrorist organisations the world over calls for better policing methodologies. With technological advancement, internal security and policing infrastructure requires better use of data and information for pre-emptive policing.

In 2016, FICCI instituted the first ever SMART Policing Awards that recognizes the best practices of policing in India. The objective of the awards is to showcase initiatives of various internal security forces for the safety and security of citizens. The initiative endeavours to change public perception and build positive and progressive image of the internal security forces.

This year, the event was held on May 5, 2018.
