National Police Commemoration Day is observed every year on October 21, in remembrance of the brave policemen who sacrificed their lives in the line of duty. Rich tributes are paid to the martyrs on this day.
This year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged the people to visit the National Police Museum. He also encouraged citizens to keep the memory of these bravehearts alive.
“We salute our police force, their families, and remember with pride those brave police personnel martyred in the line of duty today on Police Commemoration Day. They perform their duties with utmost diligence. Their courage always motivates us,” Modi tweeted.
The Governor of Maharashtra, – Bhagat Singh Koshyari, State Chief Secretary – Ajoy Mehta, DGP of Maharashtra – Subodh Jaiswal, Commissioner of Police, Mumbai – Sanjay Barve, paid homage to the martyrs who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.
History
On October 21, 1959, 20 Indian soldiers were attacked by the Chinese troop in Ladakh. This altercation between the troops led to the death of ten Indian policemen. Seven others, who were imprisoned, managed to escape. On November 28, 1959, the Chinese troops handed over the dead bodies of the martyred policemen to India. Their cremation was held with full police honours at the Hot Springs in Ladakh. Since then, October 21 is celebrated as Police Commemoration Day in remembrance of the martyrs.
