The Maharashtra State Police has always been a step ahead than other police forces in the country because they are tech-savvy. The State Police are using new inventions in technology to tackle criminals and curb crime in the city more effectively.
The current coronavirus pandemic has been steadily increasing in Maharashtra. Thousands of people with a travel history, or those who have been in close contact with infected people have been asked to quarantine themselves at their respective homes. Thus, to identify such people, the Maharashtra Government has come up with a unique solution to keep an eye on individuals placed under home quarantine.
Armed with cutting-edge artificial intelligence technology, Maharashtra Police has launched ‘Maharashtra Home Quarantine Tracking System’ – a selfie-based face recognition and geo-location tracking application developed by a Bengaluru-based company, Vijña Labs.
Using the face and geo-location of a home-quarantined individual, this application analyses data in real-time by using artificial intelligence technology.
Application Functions
The app enables the quarantined individual to register his name, selfie and geo-location.
The users can then mark their quarantine attendance in real-time, wherein their face and geo-location are analysed in real-time using AI technology.
Once this information is uploaded to the cloud-based artificial intelligence server, the details are verified against the database of records. The registered individuals are then notified through an SMS and the app.
Real-time Analysis of Face and Location
The users can open their app and upload their selfie with automated geotagging. This quarantine attendance information is then sent to the server for real-time analysis of face and location using an AI algorithm.
The AI engine analyses the uploaded information to record the quarantine attendance. If the user fails to upload their genuine picture or if they are away from their registered geo-location, a real-time alert is triggered on the dashboard.
Based on the alert, the authorised personnel can take appropriate action for non-compliance of home-quarantine guidelines. This solution is a real-time, pre-emptive and precautionary measure to contain the spread of the novel coronavirus.
“In the past several days, we have witnessed cases where people with a home-quarantine stamp on their hand are roaming around the city, putting the lives of other people at risk,” said a police officer attached to the Mumbai Police. “The person who had been asked to self-quarantine at home should not go out and minimise the interaction with his family members for at least 14 days. This App helps us to get the details and the person’s exact location,” the officer added.
Meanwhile, 450 more COVID-19 cases have been reported in Maharashtra, taking the total number of coronavirus cases in the State to 2,455 respectively. The rest of India has registered 11,000 coronavirus cases till April 15, 2020, when this article was prepared.
