As Kolkata moves towards a more protected and integrated society, practical alterations to the inherently embedded notions of policing have also undergone changes.
Having the right people in the right roles, getting one-and-all to react with adequate promptness, portraying a humane side of the law enforcing agency have all contributed to bringing about a change— a change for the well-being of the people in general and the needy in particular.
With this city moving on at its own pace, having been able to dispel the dread and reaching out as a friendly force that not only listens but also acts; the Kolkata Police has covered a rugged terrain.
For those who made it possible lie the wishes and blessings of the genial folks of this City of Joy who are “quick with a joke or to light up your smoke,” as Billy Joel sang of his friend “John at the bar” in ‘Piano Man’.
The Kolkata Police has its profile on social for a few years now. And apart from daily updates and festive greetings, it also has a grievance section with a followership in hundreds. Interestingly, the profile also has a section where citizens’ complaints against policemen have also been registered and addressed.
With a refurbished social media page, Kolkata Police aims to reach out to its critics as well. This city’s tastes and pace, its beliefs and heritage, its cultural inclinations and inherent nature—all seem to be addressed by these valiant men in uniform. Round-the-clock vigil, community policing, managing the city’s streets, protecting the womenfolk, ensuring public safety—the supercops do it all. Every day, day in and day out.
Several constables and officers have also been awarded for performing their duty in assisting citizens. When the #MeToo issue against sexual harassment gathered speed, the Kolkata Police urged the citizens to come out in huge numbers. The Facebook profile said: “We urge you to be strong, we want youto be very, very angry about the leering, jeering, threats, verbal and physical abuses”. People were told to lodge complaints every time such incidents occurred and help was ready.
In a nutshell, the dedication of the Kolkata Police with immaculate outreach and exceptional commitment makes it a ‘super friend’ from a ‘supercop’, ever ready with a helping hand wherever it’s needed.
