The government of Maharashtra undertook an ambitious tree plantation initiative to ensure the green cover of the state grows. The state government decided to plant two crore trees on July 1 across Maharashtra.

The annual celebration of Van Mahotsav, popularly known as Forest Day, starts today and will continue for a week across the nation. The intention of this annual celebration is to improve the green cover, especially in unforested areas. Started in 1950 by the Ministry of Agriculture, this year the forest department has announced to plant three crore saplings across Maharashtra.

Apart from forest department and police, even citizen and NGOs took part in tree plantation drive. The Mumbai police also joined in with a lot of zeal across the city with cops at several police stations planting saplings. The police officers from all over city removed their valuable time to take part in tree plantation initiative to ensure the green cover of the state grows. The Mumbai police took to twitter to post pictures of the various tree plantation initiatives.

Speaking to Mumbai Protector, Sudhakar Pujari, ACP (Borivali), said “the Van Mahotsav celebrations this year, is also encouraging people to come forward and participate in tree plantation drives across the city. I have been requesting people to join this movement as it is essential to increase the green cover of the city and by doing it on this occasion; this is not just about planting trees but also ensuring that they survive.”
