On the 12th Anniversary of the 26/11, Maharashtra Chief Minister, Uddhav Thackeray, inaugurated the Martyrs’ Gallery showcasing the 797 police personnel killed in the line of duty, including the policemen who died in the 2008 attack by LeT terrorists.
The Gallery houses a museum — part morgue, part memorial, part viewing gallery and part corridor of filing cabinets filled with stories of these police personnel martyred in the line of duty.
Over the past one year, the police compiled a list of martyred personnel between 1960 and 2019. Their names and photographs are exhibited in the Gallery. This is part of an extensive conservation and restoration work undertaken by architect Abha Narain Lambah; a vision conceptualised by former State Director General of Police, Datta Padsalgikar. While addressing the media, Thackeray also encouraged Home Minister Anil Deshmukh that such a gallery be replicated in other parts of the State as well.
