
People primarily expect police to extend assistance in every situation. We do honour their faith on us and respond to the ever increasing needs of the people within the purview of law. Keeping people’s expectation in mind, concrete steps have been taken to increase the quality of policing and quantity as well. Recruitment in the force has been initiated to increase the police-public ratio. A phase of recruitment process has finished recently under the directions of the Hon’ble CM. More units have been created in West Bengal Police by bifurcating existing units. Specialised units have also been created to cope up with the situation. Commissionerate system of policing has already been introduced with the creation of six commissionerates. Chandannagar Commissionerate comprising of seven police stations of Hooghly district is the newest one. Cyber Cell in CID has been made well equipped with modern gadgets to combat crimes like cyber fraud, ransom attack on system etc. We have also strengethened our social media platform through Twitter, Facebook and WhatsApp to create a public interface.
New districts have been created for reaching out to people speedily in a better and coordinated manner even in the far flung but crucial areas. A new district – Kalimpong has been curved out from Darjeeling district to ensure that the areas should get more attention for overall interest of the hill region. Jhargram and Paschim Bardhaman have also been curved out respectively from Paschim Medinipur and Burdwan districts. Besides creation of these three new districts, the state government also formed three police districts- Baruipur, Diamond Harbour and Sundarbans in South 24 Parganas.
West Bengal Police has put special emphasis for ensuring road safety. Traffic department has taken many measures to bring down road accidents with required changes in road engineering and also through installation of CCTV cameras, watch towers, signage, LED screens, incandescent speed breakers, etc. Efforts for better traffic management have been made by augmenting strength of traffic police. “Safe Drive Save Life” campaign conceptualised and initiated by Hon’ble Chief Minister has been made popular and effective steps have been taken by involving all stakeholders. “No Helmet No Petrol” policy in the state has yielded better result and compelled two-wheeler operators and pillion riders to use helmet to avert accidents on roads. Police is also taking steps against rash and drunken driving which often take the toll of valuable lives.
The police in West Bengal over the years have strengthened the bond with the communities by involving them as its eyes and ears through different community policing initiatives. Introduction of ‘Sukanya’- an initiative for empowering girl students is one such latest initiative. The people of the state are the real driving force to help us to meet their expectations in right earnest.
